Sérgio Rodrigo (Diamantina, 1983) is a Brazilian composer and multi-instrumentalist. His work integrates contemporary classical music, improvisation, soundtrack, and creation with technological resources. He frequently collaborates with groups dedicated to contemporary concert music, also exploring exchanges with popular music in addition to projects involving partnerships with artists from literature, visual arts and cinema.
Sérgio Rodrigo studied composition at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia, Rome, with Ivan Feele and at the Conservatory of Strasbourg, with Daniel D'Adamo and Tom Mays. Groups such as Ensemble Intercontemporain, Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra, Exaudi Vocal Ensemble, Ensemble Court-Circuit, Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, Ensemble Nikel, Ensemble Divertimento, Ensemble Khoo, Cepromusic, Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra, Camerata Aberta, among others, have performed Rodrigo's music. He has participated in several composition festivals, including the Voix Nouvelles, ManiFeste and Musica festivals (France), Domaine Forget (Canada), Zeitkunst (Germany), Time of Music (Finland), Venice Biennale (Italy), International Workshop by Divertimento Ensemble (Italy), among others. Rodrigo has worked with composers such as Stefano Gervasoni, Francesco Filidei, Eva Reiter, Franck Bedrosian, Brain Ferneyhough, George Benjamin, Chaya Czernowin, Yan Maresz, Philippe Hurel, Samir Odeh Tamimi, and others.
Sérgio Rodrigo was composer-in-residence at the Zeitkunst Festival in Berlin, at the Sacatar Foundation in Salvador/Brazil. He was also in residence at La Chartreuse - Le Centre national des écritures du spectacle (2020 and 2021), and at the Royaumont Foundation (2021). His music has twice received the "Camargo Guarnieri" composition prize (2009, 2010) and the "Tinta Fresca - 2010" prize in Brazil. He has also received international awards in Canada (Domaine Forget Festival 2012), Mexico (Ibermusicas Prize, 2018), and Italy ("Michele Novaro" Prize, 2018 and "Maxwell Davies" Prize, 2016).
Since 2019, Sérgio Rodrigo has been pursuing a doctorate in composition at the University of Strasbourg in partnership with the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg. He is developing a thesis on African and Afro-Brazilian musical epistemologies and musical composition.
